Strong Peppermint Simile Poem

Sour Worm poems with similes
A sour worm looks like a ridged elastic mountain
with sugary snow crystals on top of it.
It smells like sweaty shoes
that make you catch your breath.
But when you eat one
its little kick sets off a sour explosion.

Land Art
Our term 4 topic is Art and Creativity. For a week we went to each senior room and did an art activity. One of them was land art. Land Art is about nature and using the things around you to create something amazing.
I was trying to express with my design what nature presents and how beautiful it is.

Art Experts Week 3
There are heaps of great opportunities to work with artists in Week 3 of our Inquiry. You have made your choices and are beginning to complete the sessions. I have seen some brilliant pastel drawing and fine flax flowers. Don't forget to blog about what you are doing.
Ron Mueck exhibition
Scultpture with Leah
Pastel drawing with Mike Glover
Arty books with Tiffany
Soap carving, string art, mosaics, dance, drama, computer composition, plaster of paris sculpture, fabric and fibre, flax weaving, Maori art, Samoan dance ....
Land art by Angus
A land art depiction of the ocean, complete with fish and other creatures.
Think carefully about what you learn and how you might use those skills later in our inquiry when you want to express yourself. What is important to you that you might want to tell the world?

Pizza fraction challenge
Our learning teams are all working on fractions at the moment and I found this cool question for you to answer.
The Adventures of Mrs. Meatball.
Mrs. Meatball orders pizza cut into 8 slices. Her daughter eats 1/4 ofthe pizza. Her son eats 1/2 of the pizza and she eats one slice.
1. Is there any pizza left?
2. What fraction of the pizza did the family eat?
I got this questions straight from the blog of Sensational Seven but beware - they are only seven and eight years old. I hope we can answer their maths problem!
Go and check out their answers and make sure you post your answer on our blog as a comment. Don't forget to explain how you solved the problem and add your first name.
Always keep safe by not posting any other personal details on the blog.

Adopting 'Rock Babies'
As part of the beginning of our inquiry we have adopted 'Rock Babies' to see how hard it is to meet the needs of a child. Many of our babies have clothes, faces and even little box houses. We have to look after them and solve the challenges we face each day. We write a diary with our ideas and what we are learning about child needs.
The first challenge was to find someone to look after our baby when we went to the sports tournament. The second challenge was to find a way to keep our baby warm as we live in a shack with no electricity.
I wonder what Allana will dream up for us to solve next!

Congratulations on becoming a proud parent .... of a 'Rock Baby'.
I want to be the first to congratulate you on becoming the proud adoptive parent of a 'Rock Baby'. I know you will do everything within your power to meet your child's needs and make sure it has a happy and rewarding life.
Leave us a comment to explain how you will meet the needs of your 'Rock Baby'. You have a few days to get organised as the sports tournament is not until Thursday. But don't forget that according to the Convention of the Rights of a Child there are many things you need to think about.
How will you manage with your first challenge of parenthood?

Sing along to 'Boy' song Poi E
Is your class or school up for a collaborative challenge?
We have been challenged to record the footage of us singing and dancing to Poi E - the waiata track from 'Boy'.
If you join in and send us the footage, we could make a really cool multi-school version. Get in on the fun - make poi, learn the song and work out your moves. Record the whole song and try to be creative. Let's see what we can do as a team! Leave us a comment if you are up to the challenge.
Here are the instructions on how to make a poi:
- from Awakeri School
- from the Auckland Museum
Or you could visit our favourite Mellville Intermediate.... they have heaps of Maori Language Week links - including how to make a poi. Check them out!

News Flash - find out the winners of the competition, and view all the entries from our News Blog.
And here we have the final entry in the competition. These Year 6 boys worked on this video in their own time, at home. Another awesome effort! By now you should have a great idea of what the A+ characteristics mean at Springston School.

Be restorative - fix the problems up
This is a really cool cartooning tool that lets you design a simple storyline. Click on the Speak Up link to try the tool for yourself. It is limited to three settings but is a fun place to start. Try creating your own cartoon in the Easter Break and printing a copy off for school.
I'm still trying to figure out how to get the image big enough to read clearly!

Creme Egg Advert Challenge - Goo Advert
I took up the homework challenge to show how my creme egg was crushed. Sadly it jumped off the diving board and missed the swimming pool. Lucky that I was there to clear up the mess - mmmmmmm! Thanks to my dad for his excellent filming.

How is Team Endeavour going for you?
During Circle-Time yesterday we discussed what was working for us in Team Endeavour and what we thought was not working. People were very honest and we are beginning to make the changes to improve what needs fixing. Here are some of the things we talked about. This wall will remind us of the good points and what we need to work on.

Choice and Challenge Skateboarding
In Team Endeavour we are running choice and challenge for the Juniors, on Fridays. This is a thing that we do with the little children. Our activity is teaching them how to skateboard!! Check out our advertising poster.
First we will show them the parts of the board and then the basics like standing and moving. If they get better we will show them how to turn and push off by themselves. Maybe even teach them how to stop and go faster or go up and down ramps. If they get really good we will teach them how to 'ollie'. (a trick)
School Swimming Sports
On February 17th Springston School went to Halswell Pool to do swimming races. It was pretty cool because the Year 7 and 8 did a pyjama race. It was tricky when they kept falling off!

A "Can-DO" activity this week is to experiment with this interactive postcard. The link is Crick Seaside Postcard .
Keep the speech short or it will not fit into the bubbles.
Here is my attempt. Yours will be much funnier I am sure!

Meet the Team
(Oops - sorry Tom - we'll have to make a new one with you on it!)
We have been learning how to create wordles. You have to be very careful so there are no spelling mistakes and the capitals are all there because you can't go back and change things - you just have to start again!
Check out this link to make a wordle of your own.
