Probability - what'[s the chance of opening the right suitcase?

Check out this game that uses probability.
Can you use what you know about chance to help you make the right choice?

Link to the game.

Finish off these statements with the right ending...
even chance or 50:50, unlikely, certainty or 100%

One chance out of 26 =
One chance out of 1 =

Explaining lines of symmetry

Lines of symmetry - the challenge is to make your own movie or explanation of symmetry.  You will need to follow these steps.

1.  Take 5-7 clear photographs with examples of symmetry in the classroom and playground
2.   Identify how many lines of symmetry there are - 1, 2, horizontal, vertical, diagonal, multiple
4.  Insert the images into a drawing programme and add the lines of symmetry
5.  Insert the images into iMovie - explaining the learning point

Check out the rap this teacher made for his kids.  I am sure you could make a better explanation for the kids to learn about symmetry.

Symmetry Movie

Last year Lucy applied her knowledge of symmetry to make this movie.  Can you see vertical and horizontal lines of symmetry? Can you make your movie as educational as this.

Remember to use the technical language:
vertical line of symmetry, horozontal, diagonal, symmetry, multiple lines of symmetry.

Working as a team to graph M & M colours

We worked hard to use our team skills during maths.  Our challenge was to graph the different colours in the M & M container.  Here are our success criteria:

Bar Graph:
Clear title
Numbers on the lines starting at 0
X and Y axis labelled
Ruler used to draw bars

Team Work:
Listen to others
Share ideas
Take turns
Carry out your job
Encourage others

Probability - what's the chance?

We have been looking at chance and probability.  Today we created this chart to help us see how fractions, percentages and words can all explain the chance of something happening.

Pop-up Area Animals

Let's try another way to experiment with area an perimeter.  Check out these cool pop up animals.  What NET or pattern would you use to create one?  What would the area be and the perimeter?

think carefully about how to fold your animal so that it stands and looks cool!  We are expecting to see an Explain Everything showing how you calculated the perimeter and area of your animal.

Maths: Area & Perimeter What's in your name?

We are looking at the perimeter and area of spaces.
That is:
Perimeter:  how far around the outside  - cm
Area: how much to cover the surface  - cm squared

1.  Make the letters of your name using blocks on the maths sheet.
(Try to use whole blocks & straight lines.)
2.  Colour in the letters so it is clear how many squares are used.
3.  Count how many edges of the blocks around the outside of each letter = perimeter
4.  Count how many blocks used up in total to cover the letter = areayhu

Pirate equal shares

We had trouble doing equal shares using repeated addition so Allana had to find another way to do it.  Our pirates didn't share gold coins or even jewels.  Our pirates shared Fruit Bursts.

When we shared equally, these we the steps we took.
1. Find the total to share and by how many
2. Skip count in tens to see if that fits
3. Move down to skip count in fives
4. Try skip counting in twos to see if they fit
5. Share out what is left over

4 + 4 + 4 + 4 =16
4 x 4 = 16

5 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 = 25
5 x 5 = 25

Strategies: skip counting in 5

Jojo, Isabella M and Charlie are becoming experts at skip counting in 5.  The abacus is hidden and they have to know how many beads have been shifted by the clinks they hear.

This helps you learn your times tables.

Maths strategy - Bonds to 10

Maya helped Jojo and Harriet create an Explain Everything to show us how to use the Bonds to 10 strategy.
