Explaining lines of symmetry

Lines of symmetry - the challenge is to make your own movie or explanation of symmetry.  You will need to follow these steps.

1.  Take 5-7 clear photographs with examples of symmetry in the classroom and playground
2.   Identify how many lines of symmetry there are - 1, 2, horizontal, vertical, diagonal, multiple
4.  Insert the images into a drawing programme and add the lines of symmetry
5.  Insert the images into iMovie - explaining the learning point

Check out the rap this teacher made for his kids.  I am sure you could make a better explanation for the kids to learn about symmetry.

Collaborative Springs Poem 3

Spring Poem 3
Written by Reeve, Jess, Josh & Reuben, Daniel and Jordy
Springston School and Ranzau School

I know spring is coming because...

Calves sail through the air as they leap with joy.
The daffodils bloom in the air and go with the flow of the wind.
Lambs jump like rockets into the sky.
Lambs snuggle fluffy like socks your  grandma knitted.
Leaves sprout with joy from the trees.
The flowers pop up like popcorn ready to eat.
Trees sway from side to side like someone dancing.

Visit Room 10 Raumati Beach School

Check out this cool school blog - http://room10atrbs.blogspot.co.nz

They have been experimenting with Wordle and word patterns.

I think we could have a try too.  Make sure you visit them and leave a comment on their blog to say thanks for the idea.

I wonder who will be the first to find out where their school is?  Leave a comment with your guess.

Cain's Arcade - out of boxes!

Check out the learning that Cain did in his summer holidays.

You have been given an art or construction challenge and some free choice spots in your home learning grid.  I wonder if you can be as creative as Cain?

Remember that this took Cain many weeks to complete so don't expect to finish a masterpiece in one week, but we would love to see photos of your progress and ideas sent via. e-mail for the blog.

Brookburn Quadblogging School

After some great comments for our focus week from Wix Primary, it is now time to start laying those comments on the Brookburn Blog.

So get your commenting skills out and get over to Brookburn School.

Don't forget our success criteria for an effective comment.
1. Are they positive and encouraging comments?

2. Are they questioning comments?
3. Are they constructive comments? (what they could improve)
4. Do they make sense and have correct spelling / punctuation?
5. Would you feel good to get this comment on your post?

Camera Spot 2

Taking Macro Shots:

When taking a macro shot, walk closer to the subject rather than use the zoom.  There is no macro on the iPad so only walk close if it is still in focus.  This shot is good for things like fossils, flowers and insects.

Using different Angles:
The subject stays the same but your camera angle changes how it looks.  Remember that the GIANT angle makes things look small, the eye-level angle makes things look normal and the snail angle makes things look huge - just like they would to a snail.  The possum view is pretty cool - it is snuggled up very close as if you are hanging onto the subject.

Camera Shot Challenge:
This week you need to take three photos.
1. A macro shot (try the fossils or flowers)
2. A portrait from an unusual angle (giant view, snail view...)
3. A photo with guiding lines (guide you to the subject)

Taking a photo - basic rules & head shot

We are looking at how to take a good photo this term.
This is so we can use the iPads and camers to support our learning and to enter the photography competition for the end of the month.

Lesson number 1 - basic rules with a camera...
iPad notes:  There is no lanyard for an iPad so you must always hold it with two hands.  Steady it against a table or yourself so the shot is not blurry.  Check which camera you are using - the front or the back one and make sure the cover or your fingers don't get in the way.

Lesson number 2 - head shot...

Challenge:
Take two photographs of people - one or more together, in the classroom during learning times.  Make the subject (the people) the biggest in the picture but think about the story you are trying to tell.

On the iPad, e-mail your image to Room 6 then save it as Jeremyheadshot1 - name type of photo then number.  Go to our e-mail then save your image in the Photography Term 2 folder.

24,002 Blog Visitor Party

We celebrated 24,002 visitors to our blog on Friday.

We had to think carefully about how to say this number and think it is a pretty large number of visitors.  Thanks to Eli and his mum for the yummy fudge and Graeson and his mum for the chocolate cake.

Let's plan another party for our new target - 30,000!

Visit our Blog Posters

Our challenge in Term 2 is to get more people visiting our blog and leaving commnents.
To do this we might need to advertise our blog - starting with our families.
One of your ICT challenges is to develop an advertising poster for our blog in Comic Life.

What skills will you need?
What workshops will we have to run?
Who can you get good ideas from...?

ACTION:

Check out his blog and write him a message to say what is effective about his poster.

Write a comment on this post about what you think we should use for an effective poster.  Try using the Junior School tool - a fist list.  That means one idea for each finger.

Secret Location 4 Solved!

Well done - Secret Location 4 was the Chateau Tongariro in Whakapapa Village, which is in Tongariro National Park, with Mt Ruapehu in the background.   Well done to the two final winners, although Room 17 of Westport North gave lots of good ideas along the way too!
