Three ECO projects for Term 1

There are three amazing projects to start 2014 for all Springston ECO Warriors.  The ECO Teachers will be helping but we are looking for some Senior Students to lead some of these projects.

1.  Make a scrapbook page about what we achieved last year - to be published in a book! (End Term)

2.  Environmental Earth Hour Movie - for a competition (Due March 7th)

3.  Ellesmere Re-cycled Sculpture Competition (Due 31st March)

Anyone can join an ECO project so roll on up and belong to one of the project teams.   Come to Room 4 at eating lunch to put your name down for the project you want to be part of!

Butterfly Garden - The Insect Hotel

We have built the Insect Hotel in the Butterfly Garden.  Just like the tepee, it was bigger than we expected and should house many insect vistiors.  We were very A+ adaptable because the weather was terrible but we kept going.

Our next step is to:
1.  Make an Insect Garden sign.
2.  Complete some research on some of the insects we might get visiting.
3.  Make information cards and blog posts about the insects.
4.  Keep planting to attract insects.
5.  Build the catepillar at the front of the garden.

Over the holidays Allana is going to search for some ornamental yarrow, honeysuckle, bergamont and a buddleia bush to plant in the garden.

Scraps for Bokashi

Today at lunchtime we found out how to re-cycle our scraps of food to feed the garden.  It is called the BOKASHI.

First we chopped up the scraps.
Next we sprinkled the mix in the BOKASHI bin.
We tipped the scraps in and sprinkled some more mix in.
The food will turn picked and turn into soil when we bury it in the garden.
This is a better idea the putting our scraps in the LANDFILL!

Making Scarecrows

Zanada plans to make a number of scarecrows in Term Two.  One with the Green Fingers (Secret Garden Team), another with the Juniors in Choice and Challenge and a third as an ECO Challenge with anyone who is interested.

Bring along a hat, long sleeved shirt, some trousers or even a 'bus vest' for your scarecrow.  Remember that you will not get these things back but they are a donation to the Secret Garden.  What creative things might your scarecrow need? (apron, hat, walking cane, gloves, carrot...)

There will be a school challenge to name these scarecrows.  Make sure you get involved, help make a scarecrow,  get to know them and select the best name.
