Is your class or school up for a collaborative challenge?
We have been challenged to record the footage of us singing and dancing to Poi E - the waiata track from 'Boy'.
If you join in and send us the footage, we could make a really cool multi-school version. Get in on the fun - make poi, learn the song and work out your moves. Record the whole song and try to be creative. Let's see what we can do as a team! Leave us a comment if you are up to the challenge.
Here are the instructions on how to make a poi:
- from Awakeri School
- from the Auckland Museum
Or you could visit our favourite Mellville Intermediate.... they have heaps of Maori Language Week links - including how to make a poi. Check them out!
Thanks for the plug! You should also think about having a look at the class from our school that did their own version of this music video, including all the dancing, they loved it! Will keep watch this week to see what you come up with!
ReplyDeleteOkay Springston! How about this Dunedin class takes on your challenge? We would love to put together a video clip of classes around the country having a go at Poi E! Even if it is just our two classes - can we put together a collaborative video/photo montage of our celebrations during Maori language week? What better way to come together for te mahi o kai?! I look forward to hearing from you!
ReplyDeleteWow - things move quickly! Mellville - we would love to see what the class in your school achieved. Where can we find a link please?
ReplyDeleteTo the Scoopers - I shall put the challenge to the E-Team first thing Monday morning and we will get straight back to you. It sounds pretty exciting.

Thanks Allana - I am keen to get footage of classes learning the waiata or celebrating maori language week in any way that they interpret it... We are making kumara chips tomorrow and playing rakau games the next... Any footage is great footage... keen to show e-collaboration and shared learning experiences around the country...
ReplyDeleteHow can we get a few more schools on-board? I know a few more classes at our school would be keen to join in but it would be nice to include a wider range of people. I'll ask Carol to put it on Twitter.

Mr Webb - you are an active Mellville Twitter person - we know because lots of people visited us earlier this year as a result of your suggestion. Could you please do us another big favour and suggest that anyone wanting to join in on a waiata challenge might like to visit and get in contact. This has begin to get bigger than I thought ... might take some thinking on how to progress next!
ReplyDeleteThanks - Allana
Wow this is going to be really hard to learn, but when we do it will be fun to sing.

Tu Meke!! Count me in! I loved the end of the movie Boy when they played the Michael Jackson style version of Poi E....I can see the E-Team doing an even better job. Liz.
ReplyDeleteI admire how your school celebrates Maori Language Week. It is a very important week and you have celebrated it very nicely. What an awesome school!

We have been working very hard on learning the words for this song - they are very fast! We are finishing off our poi this next week and have Isabel's mum coming in to help with our poi moves. Cory is thinking about his 'break dance' moves and we are perfecting a haka while we are on camp with Taine's dad. We can't wait to see how it all comes together. Don't expect anything to be finished too soon as it takes time to create something wonderful.
ReplyDeleteSorry that we have not been very active on the blog in the last two weeks but we have had no internet access and that makes things tricky.
ReplyDeleteWe are still doing wonderful things in the classroom and have lots to share with you as soon as we can get it all sorted.
Check out our links under child rights and reporters. We were very challenged by the 'Blood Chocolate' clip and the 'Human Rights' adverts on Youth for Human Rights. We have been using visual organisers to help sort out our thoughts and feelings.
